Merry Christmas 2009

I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas.

On the way home from work tonight I thought that I would take a few snaps of the Christmas lights. Some residents spend a lot of time preparing their display like this one which I notice every year. I think to myself that I must stop to take a photo, but I don't. Tonight a stop was planned

Farther up the block I notice a simple display of un-coloured lights (plain). While I have never seen a Conch house in person, this particular house had a veranda with overhang along with a white picket fence. I didn't notice it at first until I went screaming past and had to turn around

IMG_2326

Here is a display with few lights but instead has lit props

IMG_2328

You probably have better eyes than I, and I spotted the roof top Santa as I was putting my tripod away

IMG_2330

In previous years, this home had a very elaborate display with thousands of lights. I can only imagine that because of the economic uncertainty it has been reduced to this. Simple but effective

IMG_2332

The house next door also had a modest display of lights

IMG_2333

Which is dwarfed by the house across the street

Try as I might but I could not find a tree as large as Jimbo's (Cpa3485)

I truly hope that you enjoy your time off, visit family and friends and eat like you've never tasted food before and don't spare any turkey, they do taste good especially with stuffing. Remember that all desserts are low cal and it is your duty to have seconds

I leave you with this song of the season, performed by Wendy Cutler and Ralph Shaw from the Vancouver Ukelele Circle, Vancouver, BC. This video was taken with my new hybrid camera as my first test video. See if you can spot Mrs Skoot playing in the audience. Make sure to click on the HD button

  2. Nice shots of the lights & houses :)
I love the second one with the picket fence & all the white shapes and textures. I've never heard of a Conch house. Guess I'll be googling here shortly.

Have a Merry Christmas & joyful holiday season!

  3. Wot? No snow? And whats that red and white flag doing? Where's the blue? Very confusing post. And lest anyone get the wrong idea Conch is pronounced "konk."
    Not everything is confusing.

  4. I'm with Conchscooter, Christmas lights without snow just looks wrong. I'd be happy to send you some; we've recently acquired a few inches.

  6. Mike:

I'm not sure what the problem is but I suggest that it may be at your end. I check all my videos after posting to make sure they run. Because this one is HD it is a very big file. If you do not have enough resources (ie: memory) or your connection is clogged then it may not buffer correctly. This files was nearly 400 MB for 3+ minutes.
I just tried again from work and it plays correctly

    Bluekat:

I use a flashlight to check my camera settings as it is very dark. On two of those shots I could see them trying to look at me from inside wondering what I was up to. That one with the picket fence caught my eye too. That was the reason I turned around and headed back. White, simple yet effective.
Merry Christmas to you too and thanks for stopping by

    Mr Conchscooter:

It's only confusing for OLD, Curmugeons from the "old" country. "Konk" is a word for when your car doesn't start, as in "my car konked out" .
AND, why would it snow here ? We are the Key West of Canada.

    Chris:

I notice you are having a lot of fun with your Ural, better than having a RTV. Of course you would like snow, but "we" from the Wet Coast would prefer "without". Pictures are good enough

  7. SonjaM:

Thank you for your snow offer but the Rockies were put in place to keep snow on the other side (Your side). We had enough of it last year.
It's going to be cold and dry for the next week. Perhaps we may get a ride in, you never know . . .
Merry Christmas to you too. Enjoy the Holidays, eat, drink and be merry.

  9. I took a picture of the big tree decorated with lights behind the police station last night. The tree is behind a secured area for police cars. In order to get the whole tree I had to stand on a curb next to the block wall and point the camera over. An officer accosted me and asked what I was doing.

Sort of like the people in the houses you were taking pictures of.

Love the lights. We're going on a sightseeing run tonight.

    Merry Christmas!

  13. Hi Bob, hope you and Mrs. BobSkoot had a great Christmas! I think I spotted your lady friend wearing a white turtle neck and strumming away -:)

I always thought 'konk" was what happened when I didn't see the tree limb hanging over the sidewalk as I walked down the street -:)

  16. Bob,
I'm not a good mechanic either. :) Get a new Ural with a warranty. They are much more reliable than the older ones.
