Reflector tape & decals

Last week was a relaxing 3 day Holiday weekend to celebrate Queen Victoria's Birthday.  Since Mrs Skoot is out of commission and house bound I decided to just stay home after making breakfast of eggs, bacon and  oatmeal.  I mean it wouldn't be fair to just gallivant around the countryside and enjoy myself while she had no choice but to stay home, would it ?

So I brought out my package of Canadian decals and relector tape to make my bike more visible at night.  Last year I attached some reflector tape to my OEM sidecases but when I installed my new bracket and topcase I never got around to it

I am following the pattern of my Vstrom, on the left.   I am of the opinion that if I found myself riding at night and a car came up fast from behind whilst on the highway, that I would be more visible.   I have tried all colours and I find that the white reflector tape is better than the red ones

I also have a package of Canadian decals

I like the smaller decals and was surveying where to place them

Here's a rear view of the reflector tape and a couple of strategically placed Canadian ones

It was strenuous work and took a lot of brain power to place these into their exact positions.  It tired my brain and

I had to take a much needed rest

it's become a standing joke around the house that if I were retired, then I would be in retirement mode. This means that I would either do nothing, or putter around pretending I was doing something. So little accomplished but it took a whole day to do it and it was tiring

I was hoping to ride my Beemer over so you could sit on it. It is very low to the ground and very easy to move around. You would like it but I am running out of time and I have no vacation days left as they are all committed for this summer's longish ride. I have more decals ordered, and I should receiving them soon

I'm jealous: why don't we celebrate Queen Victoria here in GB, after all she was a German?

it seems silly that WE (in the new Country) celebrate Q Victoria's BD, but not celebrated where she lived. You have such a wealth of knowledge, you know everything, or appear to . . .

    2. Indeed I do Bob.

I also know that if you raise your seat the buffeting and noise will get worse.

Fastway foot pegs are the first step....

      More advice to follow........

  4. And I thought I had a tough day, nothing compared to the mental stress and strain to afix the correct decal in the exact spot to not interfere with any BMW systems. Did you have to wait long for the letter authorizing the placement of the decals?

    ;-)

I think it's harder to breathe in smoke from burning fires, than to affix some simple decals. I didn't realize that I needed permission from the Fatherland ?

    2. According to some, you need permission from the BMW engineers to do anything. These are the same folks that mention that BMW has not permitted sidecars since the /2 in the early 70's or top boxes before 1985 or simply state that BMW has a slew of engineers, it they thought it should be done, it would have been designed that way to begin with. You haven't run into anyone like this yet?

I haven't run into hardly any BMW riders, except for you (& Dom) and when I go to the parts department I only notice the eye candy. I find that most BMW riders aren't very talkative, perhaps because I normally ride my Vstrom there.

  5. Better that you take a nap on your bike than you bike takes a nap on you!!

    Decals are looking good Bob.

My bike has napped twice now, NO, not the "R", but the Vstrom. Once on each side so now it is balanced.

I still remember that stop in Joseph, OR. I looked and you were there, then you weren't . . .

      I have more decals coming

  6. Great idea Bob, and it's good to see you putting in the extra effort to get them just right. I want to put some reflective tape around my rims, think you could just pop over and do it for me ... I'll make cupcakes for payment :D

MMMM, I'm a sucker for cupcakes. Wished you were closer. I like to put reflector tape on all of my bikes

I think you're just jealous. This was my kind of day, only a bit warmer would have been better. Shorts and T-shirt kind of day

  8. The nice thing about not having a garage is all that natural light. I think you must have felt like you were in a hammock outside!

I bought a hammock but I haven't had a chance to try it out, Yet. I don't get that much light as I am under the carport. When I gets warmer I can move my bike into the sunlight

I seldom ride at night but I always put reflective tape on the rear. You just never know . . .

I am not used to country riding, in the city we don't have many animals, nor any deer

  10. Bob,
I'm with Edward on night riding; I don't do it unless absolutely necessary. Night riding used to be fun but there are just too many things that make the odds poor. That said, I'm all for Reflection and think those patches of bright help in any light.

  11. That is exactly what Victoria Day is great for - relaxing after a day of yard work (or garage work in your case). Everyone was so much happier having had an extra long weekend, it's too bad we don't have more stat holidays in Canada...

You were so close to Vancouver. Only ONE more long full day of driving gets you here to the Coast.

We are learning how to relax. We were always on the go and going someplace but since Mrs Skoot's recent surgery and her recent broken wrist we have slowed down a lot and thinking more about old age and the things we used to do

  12. I like to ride backroads. the last time I was in Montana I looked around the small town I was in and I could see deer damaged vehicles in every direction. It was bad enough in the daytime with the deer hopping over the road in front of me; in the dark it would be just nuts.

  13. I wasn't sure anyone could read my blog, kept sending me weird messages and no comments...we were just one more day away, need more time to get all the way out there...don't worry there will be trips to the coast in the future, I do love it out there!

Glad that Mrs. Skoot is doing well and she's healing...you will be able to get out and do all the things you used to once again once she's back to herself, it's just going to take a while. It's kind of like me waiting to get through that never-ending winter that did eventually end - while I kept reading about your lovely rides and seeing your pictures of snow-free roads...hang in there!

I imagined that as you were driving you were thinking you were on your bikes and probably waving to all the other bikers passing by. I know I do, just by habit and sometimes they give you a funny look

You mentioned before about living out here before you moved to Regina. You'll have to make a trip out one day, just to see you old stomping grounds

OKay, I get the message. Because I will be by myself my plan is to stop early, late afternoon hours before sunset and all backroads will be during daylight. I don't drive at night even in the car, we learned our lesson in AZ when we got caught in a flash flood. At night you wouldn't be able to see them
