Looking for a taste of Maine

Recently there was a promotion at one of our fast food outlets where they are offering a Lobster sandwich, for a limited time.

I remember last year when I was on a quest to have as many lobsters that I could when I rode my BMW R1200R to the Atlantic Coast.   I had lobsters all the way from Portland, Maine, Bar Harbor and up to Shediac, NB.   I thought that I could capture the feeling that I had by buying a lobster sandwich  Yes it was expensive for a mere 6" sandwich but I went for it

and had lunch at my desk at work.  I tried to savour every bite and remember the good times that I experienced last year on the East side of our Continent

Here's what my sandwich looked like.    Resembled more of a lobster salad sandwich.   Not quite the same as I had as I tried to relive the experience and trigger memories of one of the best riding summers I have ever had

I remember my first lobster roll in Portland, Maine home-made by Mike and his BRW (read here)

Turn back the clock to Monday, July 22nd, 2013 when we left Mike and BRW and headed towards Bar Harbor.   I was getting fatigued and I spotted a perfect spot for a rest break and a snack

Here we are with Vstar Lady on the right

I don't know what happened but I was getting tired and nearly ran off the road.  We took turns taking the lead and I knew that I needed to stop and what luck to find this Restaurant by the water

Thankgoodness for photos.  Now I know where we were,  Waldoboro, Maine

Here are our meals (Snacks).   Mine was the lobster roll

I found out that most places prepare two types of Lobster rolls,   One with mayonnaise which is less expensive (but still pricey)

and then there are the Bare Naked Lobster rolls.   Can't wait to get back there to try the other one

  1. Your lobster sandwich pales when compared to a lobster roll. Even served on the wrong kind of bread. Though I admit that I would've tried it as well but would have been disappointed.

So when do you leave on your adventure? Has the car been shipped?

It was a good idea to have lobster sandwiches as most people around here wouldn't know about the "real" thing. They must be overstocked with lobsters somewhere to do this promotion

It was sort of okay, better than NO lobster but it still made me dream of going to the Atlantic again.

Some logistics with shipping we are trying to sort out. Leaving 4 weeks from today

We also have salmon burgers here too. Don't forget we are on the Coast and we are famous for BC Salmon. Come out here and I'll take you to Pajos, their location is a float on the water

  3. You didn't have to be bare naked to enjoy the lobster rolls, though?

  4. The question would be does Subway even use real lobster? I agree with Richard - it appears it pales in comparison to the real thing from Maine, but then I am vegan, what would I know, lol.

Yes, it was real lobster but more like lobster salad sandwich to dilute and use less meat. I was going to tell you that Lobsters were Vegan, just so you could try some. I actually had a Subway Lobster roll when I was in Charlottetown I have to see if I have photos

  5. Bob, we have lobster tools here too, and good ones too.

I'm meeting the guy who sold me the GTS 300 tomorrow, as luck would have it for, for guess what? Lobster rolls at MuvBox in the old port. The lobster is flown in fresh from the Magdalen Islands.

That will be tomorrow's blog post.

    Stay tuned.

Now you tell me. You've been holding back. Next time we have to make a list of restaurants. One or two a day and I can stay until we finish the list. I have thought about going to the Magdalen Islands but not sure what to do there, as the island isn't that big. Our Lobsters are flown in daily and imported by The Lobster Man, on Granville Island. going price used to be $16. per lb

  6. Beemer Girl - give me a fish sandwich (as long as it's haddock) anytime, but as lobster rolls go that BC subway sandwich does look less lobsterish, but they tried. Of course by the time they fly the lobsters in from the east coast it does become a little more pricey and one might expect a little less lobster (cost of jet fuel and all that.) We will have to watch for David's post tomorrow and do a three way lobster roll comparison now won't we.

Not sure what Haddock tastes like. We have mostly Salmon and Cod out here and perhaps some Rainbow Trout. The best lobster I had last year was that Lobster bisque soup in Bar Harbor. Lots of Lobster pieces and very tasty. Too bad it was in a cardboard cup but it was expensive at us$12. for a cup portion. I would have it again, next time. It was just down the block from that Jewelry store you went into . . .

  7. That looks really delicious as I've been enjoying crab meat (artificial flavoured pollock) all week too in crusty rolls. There's something about food and smells that bring memories flooding back isn't there? My crab snacks remind me of fishing for crab off the docks in Nanaimo with my grandmother when I was just a wee girl. Glad that your lobster can bring back happy memories of a great trip out east!

we have lots or artificial crab here too. You mean, you used to live in Nanaimo ? I suppose there aren't many crabs in Regina. I remember your trip to the Rockies, just another day and you would be on the coast. I was trying to recapture the Atlantic feeling from last year

  8. The last time I got anything at a Subway was probably about a dozen years ago. I remember being disgustingly disappointed with how little meat they put on their sandwiches and can't imagine that they've improved those portions through the years. That little bit of a taste of lobster something on your roll is about what I'd have expected from them.

Generally I like Subway better than the other alternatives like McD's. I think sandwiches are healthier than all the deep fried stuff. It's just that lobster is expensive here and flown in daily from the Atlantic. Crabs are caught locally. I wouldn't have expected a Naked Lobster Roll. They cost nearly $20 in Maine

  9. I love lobster! We have bought them on occasion and savoured them, but it's a rare treat. We had a friend who would hold a lobster fest years ago and would get all his friends together and we would all pool our money and he had Atlantic connections & would get lobster flown in. OMG I miss those says. So was is disappointing to eat the sandwich? Was it the real deal or imitation?

we recently went to a local lobster fest as a fundraiser. It was $40 per person.

A few years ago we went to Tofino where we had someone supply crabs. We had a big crabfest in our Motel (with kitchen) and a local caught them for us. I like crabs too

The Subway promo is real Lobster meat but for only $8. you can't complain

we can get lots of hand peeled shrimp at Granville Market, OR we could go to Steveston and buy the big prawns right off the fishing boats and hand peel them ourselves. They had spotted prawns not long ago at the public wharf near Granville Island. We also have Pajo's for the best fish and chips in town. I like the halibut or salmon

I believe the best lobster rolls are the Naked Ones but they were nearly $20. so I opted for the lesser at only $12. so I never had a good one either. The best Lobster I had was in Bar Harbor, ME. I bought a $12. cup of lobster bisque and it must have had nearly a lb of lobster meat in there, already shelled. I would certainly go back for another one, maybe even two

  12. I've never liked lobster. And I have tried it several times. Most recently while in Maine. I mean, lobster rolls are sold everywhere. So I tried it again. Still not a fan. But I do love Maine. :-)
