Redwood Highway: Hwy 101 Northern California

August 15th, 2013:   It was mid to late afternoon by the time I headed north towards Crescent City, CA

There was another construction zone but it wasn't long before we started rolling.    It is mostly a 2 lane road as we neared Redwood National park

It was dark as we entered the tree canopy but I managed to record some video of this section.  I wanted to stop and explore but I wanted to set up camp before nightfall so I continued on.  I was a bit disappointed that the traffic was traveling so fast, and also that there were no places to stop

More info  here1  and   here2

I wished I had more time to explore more of Northern California, perhaps next time

At only 455 miles, it wasn't my longest day but I was glad to find my home for the night

and have a simple meal before it got too dark

I really wanted to stop somewhere and snap photos of those large trees but I didn't want to stop on the shoulder (which was very narrow). It was so dark there because of the tree cover and I thought it was later than it was and the weather was getting worse. It was on the verge of rain by the time I got to Crescent City

  2. The 101 through that area is really nice with the towering redwoods. A great place for summer riding.

I really wanted to go farther south on 101 into the Lost Coast area but it will have to wait for my next trip. It would be great during the summer to get away from the Heat.

  3. Hi Bob,

Wow that's pretty amazing. I'd have wanted to stop too but just riding through it must have been amazing, it was amazing sharing your ride. Thanks ! Did I mention amazing!

I know it's a bit different from your landscape, that's why I was mentioning that I use my GPS a lot for knowing what is coming ahead and which way the road goes after the next turn. You just never get tired of riding by the Ocean

I know you would love it up there. I would say most likely "less" traffic than what you are used to, and perhaps a bit cooler. I want to ride into the "Lost Coast" one day soon

You have different rugged beauty where you are. I wanted to go farther south along the coast but I ran out of time. Even during the late afternoon the trees blocked a lot of light. I thought it was later than it actually was

  6. Bob that video so reminded me of the 'good roads' through California.

Maybe in a couple of years, say 2016+ you could consider riding West again. Lots of roads and so little time . . . I would say that you would NOT like 299 nor 36 based upon your recent Oregon Hell's Canyon experience

  7. The Avenue of the Giants and the run to the Lost Coast give a snippet of the 101 experience back in the mid 80's before the road was 'improved'. I still remember the glory of that first ride. Still, I would be happy to go back. I could easily spend several weeks in Northern California, especially the Coast. I stopped at a large General Store and stunned by the beauty I couldn't believe how empty it was. " Where is everyone"? "They're all in LA making money"; I was told.
