Hawai'i: Beaches, Waves & Water

We headed north on Hwy 11 north of Kona and about 1-1/2 hours later found us at Mahukona Beach Park

This is near the north tip of the island in North Kohala district. We noticed the tents and just presumed that the people on the park bench had camped there.

It was not a walking beach due to all the lava rock but rather a place of solitude and a place to watch the wave action. We finally made verbal contact with those by the bench and noticed they had binoculars and were watching the passing whales. They told us that they had just seen a whale breach completely out of the water. Naturally we sat down and strained our eyes to try to see too. They did not volunteer use of their binoculars but we did see some whale "water squirts" . Their dog has taken a liking to my Pink attire

The crocs are comfortable and it made it easier to drive Hawaiian style as they could be removed easily. She (never told us her name) but there were two huge cruise ships in town (Kona) so they decided to head north to avoid all the crowds.

It seemed to be a safe environment for the campers but there are no facilities. There were signs warning you not to drink the water.

The dog really got attached to me and didn't want us to leave

but we had to press on and get to higher ground

I think that we come to Hawaii to enjoy the scenery and water, it sort of relaxes you and removes the stress of life. The warmer temperatures and palm trees exude a feeling of an exotic land, an escape from our daily routines. To walk on the beach and feel the sand between your toes

and to enjoy a tropical sunset with your partner

While were only on the Big Island of Hawai'i for a week, we did manage to visit a few beaches to experience the power of the ocean. Hope you like the video

  1. You forgot to show you blind drunk enjoying the classic tropical vacation. Oh wait, that's why most people come to Key West. The other southernmost bar.

  3. Hi Bob,

How did you keep the camera so steady when that micro light thing flew over.

I looked up where Hawaii is, not being familiar with American places, you were almost on the same latitude as me Bob, and 75F (23c)is our winter too Brrrrrr.

    Cheers,

Slightly off topic, but while you've been away are bemoaned Youtube has changed...The HQ button has gone, you now have a pixel preference, and I think the quality has improved even beyond that of Vimeo.

Just thought I would let you know incase you hadn't noticed the changes yet!!

    Cheers,

  6. Mr Conchscooter:

There are many things to enjoy without alcohol, besides there is no Duval Street here, at least I didn't see one

    Chuck:

The G10 was brought along as my backup camera, and also for the radio remote shutter release and night shots. All others were taken with a Panasonic lumix DMC-ZS3 which I purchased specifically for the 720p30 HD video mode, 12x zoom etc. If I need manual options then I grab the G10

    Dave:

you don't have to rub it in. Kona is at Latitude 19.648 degrees North

    Chris:

I wanted you to see the powerful wave action and the draw and height of each wave. Lots of people get dragged out you have to be very careful not to let the current push you onto the lava rocks or you will get shredded.

  8. Dear Bobskoot:

The video of the beaches was almost inspirational. The sound of the waves was positively soothing. But what I really liked best was the pure blue/green color of the ocean, which bled to white the instant it hit the rocks.

I do not have much experience with rocky beaches. The first time I ever saw one was in Maine. I was amazed at how beautiful it was to look at, and how difficult it was to walk on.

Crocs would be out of the question for me... I'd be wearing hiking boots.

    Fondest regards,
