Off the Grid

Right now I am "stuck" in Joseph, Oregon without internet service. Friday was the official start of the IMBC2012 and bloggers started rolling into town where we decided to meet in Baker City, have a relaxing dinner and Saturday ride into Hell's Canyon. Some of us arrived earlier than others and while we were waiting, those of us that were there decided to spend a relaxing non-riding day perched on a picnic table under the trees to escape the heat.

I wanted to be able to post our activities "live", as others have done, but a Canadian cell phone being used in the USA accrues expensive data roaming charges . I am able to tether my iPhone and this is the first time I have tried it, so for now I am only posting a couple of small photos.

EDIT: tethering didn't work and finding a free internet access solution is proving to be a challenge so my silence for the next few days will be a welcomed relief to some people, esp Karen who thinks that I don't know what a meadow is. And technically, I am the slowest Canadian as I was behind her and I did not ride to the end of the Road to the Dam as she managed to do.

I am here another night without internet service and next week I don't know which way the winds will blow, as I am on vacation, in Oregon with my bike, no definite plans with a "blank" slate . . . I have my tent and my credit card."

I am going to throw a dart on Monday morning and see where it lands . . .

  1. Looking good, Bob! Have a great time on your "blank slate" vacation. Chris and I are in the process of planning our Anniversary ride complete with plans to "camp" and will be leaving next Sunday if the weather allows us to. Looking forward to seeing your report!

    No internet service. No definite plans. Sounds like the perfect getaway to me.

      internet access is like a drug. I have been anxious without it. It is like clamping my mouth shut, but others may think that this is a good thing to have silence for a change

      I still have to take it easy and ride instead of walk, that's what I keep telling myself

      I would love to come to Denver, perhaps next year. This year I am vacation challenged. I have to be back at work next Monday

  7. Free Wifi @ McDonalds & Starbucks but why bother. Turn the phone & internet off and enjoy your vacation.

      No McDonalds or Starbucks in our area. Joseph and Enterprise are small towns with no chain or big box stores. Hard to even receive cell service

  8. Bob - I hope you find some twisties and you can give 'em hell cause being behind me I know you missed it at the Canyon! (but, just so you know, even if you don't know what a meadow looks like, I sure appreciated you sweeping behind me;0}

      I hope you don't freeze and that the night temps get warmer. I had too many twisties today. Someone has to take care of you. One day you can show me a meadow in the land of semis and Flatistan.

      have a safe journey and take care. It was great meeting you and you came from so far away. I hope we were worth it

      thank you but I prefer to be "on the Grid". I miss my emails and being within contact range. My office is probably wondering if I am still alive

  10. I like being "off the grid", but in small doses. I need a shot of internet once in a while to keep me going. Thanks for the tip on Rattlesnake Pass, it was awesome!
