My grocery drawer at work

I have a couple of inquisitive minds ( Richard & Lori ) wondering what my grocery drawer looks like.

These are my snacks and emergency food.   This morning it looked like this . . .

It was time for my morning coffee break and I had one piece of blueberry pie left.   I usually just divide the pie into quarters and have 1 piece every morning .   When I arrive at work at 7:30am, I have a cup of boiling water.   I cut down on coffee a few years ago and limit myself to one cup a day which I drink around 9:30am

It is hard to see what I have in there so I did a quick inventory for you:

So here are the contents of my drawer:

3 containers of instant Kraft Dinner
2 tins of canned salmon
1 tin of sardines
6 small boxes of granola bars x 6 per package
1 large box of granola bars x 18 per package
1 spare box Girl Guide chocolate mint cookies
1-1/2 bars of Belgium dark chocolate 400 g
6 small bags of Lays potato chips
7 cans of ready to eat Chef Boy R Dee Ravioli
3 large tins ready to eat Chunky soup
1 tin Cream of Corn
2 bags microwave popcorn
3 cans of Sanpellegrino natural fruit beverages
1 tin coca cola

I didn't have any Girl Guide chocolate mint cookies today even though my ration is for 2 per day, so you can see that I had good will power.  I could probably have 4 tomorrow

I neatly packed everything away .  It's like a jig saw puzzle getting everything to fit.  I have so much stuff that I am spilling over into a 2nd drawer

Right now Drawer2 only contains my cutlery, bowls, plate and extra cups.  I am running out of filing space.

  1. Ketchup potato chips! You must be in Canada. Personally, I prefer the dill pickle flavor. On every trip down, we've had to try out the variety of novel flavors, at least novel for us. You have quite a collection and you must be preparing for the next natural disaster where you will need enough food for a week.

    Thank you for humoring us...

    1. I looked through my office today and came up with 4 peanut M&M's, salt and pepper and a box of stevia packets. Pretty poor showing...

There are lots of data to presume that Stevia is not safe

      http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health-and-fitness/stevia-is-sweet---but-is-it-safe/article572504/

better to have sugar, but comsume less. Even though I don't use salt nor pepper, I have a drawer full of those Wendy's packets

    3. For me I'll stick with the stevia as an alternative to aspartame or Splenda. None are ideal but being diabetic limits my options...

  2. Dear Bob. I'd comment on your choices of things to put in your body, but I just can't. Well, except for this: Nothing tastes better than feeling good.

you can't tell by my drawer, but I seldom eat junk food but I get cravings. Most of this stuff is for emergencies.

When it snows our traffic is gridlocked so I keep some food available for lunch, like the Chunky Soup, Salmon, cream of Corn and the Kraft Dinner. It is not for normal meals and when they expire I buy more to replace it. It is just there, Just In Case. I threw out the last set.

The chips are left overs from Halloween. We bought 6 boxes containing 48 bags each and we didn't have any trick or treaters. We have tried to give it away but we still have 4 boxes left so I brought some to work.

I started to keep granola bars here so I could have a morning snack. I thought they would be healthier, but somehow they have morphed into chocolate covered Granola bars

Those microwaveable popcorn packets have been there for over 2 years. I don't know where they came from. I think I got a deal on a 3 pack and ate one. It smelled the whole office and everyone was wondering where the popcorn smell was coming from so I haven't bothered to eat the rest.

I normally eat lunch at my desk and browse the internet. When I don't have anything for lunch, my go to food are cans of ready to eat Ravioli . They are cheap, only around $1.00 per tin. There are few places to have a meal where our office is located so most of your time is wasted driving back and forth.

I eat less chocolate by buying the larger bars. With normal sized chocolate bars you tend to eat the whole thing. On these large bars, every so often I just have a square or two

Actually at home we eat healthier than we did. Less meat and smaller portions and we have been feeling better

  3. I think you are set up perfectly for when the zombie apocalypse hits and you are trapped at the office. Everyone will be running to you for supplies. You are set up pretty well. At least you have variety so you can pick and choose your snack or lunch depending on your mood.

I have 1 Clif bar in my desk drawer, 1 stick of gum, and a bunch of tea bags. Not very exciting at all.

I have some Clif bars, but they are at home. My other drawer2 has coffee packets. I just won't show you that I have a "stash"

Most of this stuff won't be eaten, it is only for lack of lunch, emergencies.

      Sonja:

when I am travelling I generally eat the good stuff and stick to safe foods

  4. WHOA bob, WOW! now thats stocked. :)
my drawer is not exciting either; almonds, crackers, green tea, ricolas, napkins...
be careful of the granola bob, they tend to be overloaded with sugar.
    happy thanksgiving!

Hard to believe that I used to bring; grapes, celery, carrot sticks and celery. somewhere along the way I switched over to Granola bars but they don't seem too sweet to me.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too, but we had ours last month, we have to work today and tomorrow

  5. Ok now I feel the need to go and stock my 'work pantry'. I am feeling very deprived after looking at your munchie stash. Cream corn?!

never thought about this being my "work Pantry". Sometimes I just open a can of salmon and that's lunch. I like kernel corn, so I heat it up before I spoon it out. This post should have been a munchie work pantry challenge . . .

  6. Impressing, you will definitely survive the next apocalypse (not that one really want to survive that though).
I have never considered chips and munchie bars 'emergency food'. And my drawer shows exactly what Brandy's look like: Clif bar, gum and a variety of tea bags.

I don't buy chips often, but "someone" (whom shall remain anonymous) bought a few boxes for "Halloween treats" and we never gave any away. No one came to our door so what to do with them. I brought some to work so we could whittle the pile down. The munchie bars are GRANOLA bars which I thought were health.

The rest of the tins are for when I have no lunch, which is seldom. I had to throw out the last batch because they passed their expiry dates.

  7. Hmmm my work pantry consists of a box of multigrain cheerios, half a bag of crackers, can of gingerale and now gone can of chicken corn chowder. I think I need to restock.

I keep a few tins of ready to eat soups during the Winter when the weather is bad I don't feel like going out at lunchtime. Those instant noodles where you just add hot water are good too, just throw out that MSG packet they put inside. That's why I have those instant Kraft Dinners. Just add boiling water and then add the cheese powder.

  8. You clearly have lots more willpower than I do. A drawer like that at work would be empty in no time if it was mine. Chips, cookies, chocolate - all the basic food groups in one place.

I don't always take something out of that drawer, and when I do it's only one thing. Generally I have an apple or grapes in the fridge. It's just that I support the Girl Guides so every year I buy a few boxes of those Mint Chocolate chip cookies.

  9. Dear Bob:
A couple days missed on your blog and you have made 5 or 6 posts in my absence. Your desk stash looks like you are waiting for the "zombie apocalypse."

We just finished our Thanksgiving feast. Pics are being posted now, not feet though.....

hope you are enjoying your time away in better weather. Don't hurry back, we are getting cooler by the day and the rains won't stop.

I think Scooterchick posted her feet recently . . . I was smiling when I noticed them

  10. Dear Bob Skoot:

Your grocery drawer looks like my forbidden in heaven. You have at least five out of six items I can never eat again. Kraft Macaroni and Cheese! I used to inhale the stuff. I haven't had a snack cake since April. Potato Chips? What the hell are they? Girl Scout cookies? The mint kind? Oh man.

    Fondest regards,

YES, they were the Girl Guide mint chocolate cookies which taste better when chilled. I like the thick Ms Vickies classic potato chips. Once you open the bag they are gone. We often have Kraft Macaroni dinner with meat balls. Simple but gooooood.

Hope your health is improving and that you will be able to ride next year. Tom's River is only around 300 miles south of Portland, Maine. Closer than you think. Can you eat Sea Food ? How about that White Castle place ?

I was worried about you after the 2nd storm hit then you disappeared. Always glad to hear from you

I just "topped" it up with the granola bars. They were on sale 4 boxes for $10., and I just brought the chips from home were we had leftover stuff from Halloween. Our daughter gave me the Kraft Dinner to add to my emergency lunch pile.

I should be all "set" until Spring

Yes, hard to believe. The lunch stuff just stays there until their expiry date. I had to throw out the last batch. Imagine that I still had a tin from 2007, and a few from 2009. I have just eaten the ones from 2012 as I didn't want to waste them. I would not have opened them but otherwise I would have had to throw them out.

The Granola bars for for my morning snack at 9:30a but I don't always have one. Sometimes I bring an apple or grapes. I only dig into them when I have nothing else, so they are sort of emergency standby items

  13. Holy Health Food Bob! Sure, the drawer is full of cookies 'cause you just want to support the Girl Guides ...My drawer, sadly, contains extra mittens, misc. junk and one old Hershey chocolate Valentine kiss from (maybe) three years ago and which, oddly enough, I went looking for the other day and couldn't find. Lessen the guilt - upgrade that chocolate almond bar to at least 80% cocoa and you are really doing something good for your health (in moderation, of course.)
Life is to enjoy - What the heck. Life is short, eat junk first.
