iMBC2012: Ride Video, Hell's Canyon Oregon

Here are some highlights of our iMBC2012 group ride into Hell’s Canyon, Oregon. I tried to show only the highlights to keep the video short but it still ended up longer than what I would have preferred. I realize that many would not find long videos of roads and asphalt interesting but this video was edited with the participants in mind and perhaps it will bring back memories of our great weekend together in Baker City, Joseph and Enterprise, Oregon.

For those who have never ridden into Hell’s Canyon you may be in for a treat. Hell’s Canyon is 2,000 feet deeper than the Grand Canyon and is the deepest canyon gorge in North America. It is 9 miles wide and the road along the canyon floor which parallels the Snake River is known as the “Devil’s Tail”, 22 miles of more or less, continuous twisties until you reach the Dam. This road is on the Idaho side and when you cross the bridge you change time zones.

  1. Thank you Bob for posting the video. And yes it does bring back pleasant memories.

It seems like such a long time ago...

glad you liked it. I was by myself and that was you I caught up to. I think your bike likes the twisty roads. It was less than 2 weeks ago and feels like a dream

Thank you. It is better to follow someone rather than riding by yourself on a strange, unknown road. After you get in the groove it was like shifting your weight back and forth to navigate those twisties. My new procedure is to take lots of clips and then only use short segments of differing scenes to keep the action continuous/changing rather than long boring sections.

thank you. I was hoping that when you saw the road you could imagine yourself riding it again, in your mind

Notice that I didn't include many of Curvistan, but lots of Flatistan as you had no problems on the "Devil's Tail". It's just what you are used to. Don't you have twisties in Prince Edward County ? I think this is in YOUR area and a beautiful, scenic road for motorcycling. Maybe next year you can show me . . .

  5. Thanks for taking the time to do the video Bob. Nicely done. It does bring back great memories.

Reminds me I need to put the electrical tape back on my visor - the sun going into Joseph was brutal on the eyes.

I was hoping that it would bring back memories of a good time, Not Flashbacks of a terrifying road. The road in the Canyon (Devil's Tail) I found melodic, shifting of your weight back and forth through the twisties and choosing your line through the curves (apex and exit). I often geared down a gear approaching a corner and then powering out. It felt great

we missed you. You would have liked this road. It was sort of like that one we took East of Spray, you know, the one you really, really liked that came out at Hardman. I wished we had stopped there for a photo. It was hot in Hell's Canyon, the thermometer registered 100°F but it was close to that.

I am amazed....the camera rotates and films your face and red lanyard seemingly by magic!

I guess it was hot - the way your screen starts to melt and flex towards the end.

N, all the way from Disney Olympic film set

I am working on Camera angles. I have a new procedure and this was the first time I am rotating my camera. I may have to find someone to machine me the attachment as I also want to record on the Right Side and behind.

that is the windscreen flexing in the wind. It moves more than you think. It keeps a lot of wind away from your body as the bike absorbs all of this force

I am waiting for you to ship your scoot to Vancouver WA, one day and we can ride somewhere. There are lots of backroads in Oregon & Southern Washington with great scenery. The next iMBC2014 will be closer to you

  9. That's my kind of road. There's not much of anything out there, eh? You did a good job editing. I like watching the road unwind in from of me as the Snake passed by on my left. :-)

The sun looked cool shining into the camera at the end, but I bet it was brutal driving into.

Hell's Canyon is in the middle of nowhere. There is a small communithy at Oxbow and Halfway but then you have to travel on a forest service road NF39 to Joseph so you would be a bit isolated. The Devil's Tail is a gentle road with easy sweepers. But don't make a mistake as the cliff is right there with no guard rails.

We were on our way to Joseph where we were booked for two nights. It was getting late, long shadows on the road, sometimes hard to see where you are turning

  10. Wonderful video. I love the way you rotated the camera. I am torn between riding that road and just floating in the water. It looks so inviting! (it goes without saying that the bike it not invited to the float party.)

I like the idea of riding but it was nearly 100°F that day so I rode a bit, took some photos then headed back to Oxbow and the bridge where I headed for some shade and walked in the muddy river. It was relaxing waiting for the group to return. Eventually we had to gear up and find our way to Joseph over the mountain road for dinner in Enterprise.
