My most valuable Asset is broken

Mrs Skoot went into surgery for her broken wrist on Friday and after a few hours of recovery the Hospital phoned to say she was ready to be transported home

She was still drowsy from being sedated and it was my job to "get her dressed" .  You should try this sometime, you know, dressing someone else.  First the underwear, socks, top, pants, then the Bra .    Some things you just can't do with only one arm.  Most males can detach one easily using only two fingers and a thumb, but it takes two hands to manipulate the hooks.   I had a terrible time.

I had to go downstairs to fetch a wheelchair to make things easier

Before I drove to the Hospital I had to change cars and bring Mrs Skoot's new Crosstrek as the seats in my car are lower and harder to crawl out for someone with a cast.

At this stage there is still a bit of pain and swelling.  She has to keep her arm at least level in height with her heart and use ice packs to keep the swelling down

We have a workable supply of Tylenol-3 and morphine tablets (pictured above).   They are much smaller than I thought they would be and I had to jump hurdles at the Pharmacy before they would release them to me.

Since it was raining I thought the best thing to do was to stay home and keep her company

It was recommended for her to eat light meals, not too much protein and stick to things like soup for a few days so eventually I had to go out and purchase more provisions

I brought out OUR small cleaver and went to the business of making something wholesome

I diced up 4-5 stalks of celery

Then I peeled 3-4 carrot sticks, and diced them up too

I brought out a soup pot, drizzled in some olive oil and started to saute them for a while and then added a spoon of flour.  After the flour was cooked I added a 28oz tin of diced tomatoes (including the water in the tin) and started to bring the mixture to a boil.   Then I used OUR  CuisinArt to chop up a head of broccoli and added it to my creation.   I am not following a recipe but rather just adding things in and I thought my soup had too many vegetables in it (too thick) so I then added a Liter of Vegetable Broth to thin it out and have more liquid.

Up until this point all you need to do is to simmer this soup for about half an hour and this Vegetable Soup will be ready to eat.   We don't use a lot of spices but we did add some Garlic and Ginger.

I decided to add a bit of protein

I bought a package of shrimp

and I sauteed them a bit in a small sauce pan

then I diced up a filet of Basa (white fish) .  The shrimps and Basa were added after it had simmered for about half an hour and I let them simmer for another 10-15 minutes to ensure they were cooked

It is finished and now it's time for a light Seafood Soup Dinner, cooked in Vegetable soup.   Good medicine for a cool, chilly, rainy day

  1. I love the soup, it's wonderful that you are making soup for your wife but I personally think the most special thing you are doing for her is doing up her Bra ... and staying home and snuggling is pretty awsome too.

Keep up the good work Bob :D

I usually stay home on the weekends when the weather is bad. and cooking is a hobby with me and I don't mind trying out different things. Today was bath day and I was the drying machine . . . I got to fasten her Bra again, eventually

I think healing has started but 6 more weeks before she is back to normal. In the meantime I have to come up with more menu ideas

  3. Sometimes surgery really puts a cramp in your life! Poor Mrs. Skoot. She looks so fragile. But you are taking excellent care if her. I'm guessing you have spoon fed her now. ;)

Keep up the good work and she will heal up in no time. Hugs and wishes for a quick recovery.

I'm waiting for your photo first !! I feel sorry for Oilburner, you are too independent and cannot be tamed and I don't mind cutting up the food to more manageable smaller pieces.

Thank you for your good wishes and I hope OB is back to his normal self

thank you. Now you know why I had to leave and do some shopping. I needed to buy the stuff for the soup and check out "that" new electronics store on Marine Drive

  5. It's sobering to see how an innocent slip on the dance floor can have such serious consequences. My best wishes to Yvonne for a speedy recovery. Looks like you didn't need any encouragement at all to pick up all the slack, do your day job, and be a top-notch nurse and gourmet home chef. I'm not in the least surprised.

    All the best,

    David

PS: I have saddlebags purchased and in transit :)

That's the problem with the aging process. Small things develop into huge consequences. Such a minor thing and look what happened. That's what I have been trying to tell you . . . slow down a bit and "smell the roses", make time for yourselves because you can't foresee the future.

Thank you. I'm smiling . . . but where is the thing that the saddlebags attach to ?

there is no way I could compete with your secret weapon "Nancy", but I'm trying. I have 6 more weeks of doing "woman's work" (I know I shouldn't say this)

That recipe will work, just make sure to simmer for at least half an hour so the flavours "blend" together. Overnight gives more time to marinate. It is healthy and you can also use scallops, prawns, salmon or other seafood

I know you are a good person too. Thankfully you found an employer who knew this enough to give you a chance. I was rooting for you all the time.

thank you for your well wishes

they did x-rays every time they put on a new cast and at every checkup, that's when they found the bones had moved causing us to have this surgery. I think we are on the right track towards healing Now.

she is too smart to read my writings so I am safe. I struggled to find the correct word and "possession" didn't sound good either.

  11. A snuggle is worth a million, but is she getting tired of having pictures taken of her hand yet? Poor Mrs. Skoot, the hand looks so swollen. (Just a tip, if she has been given morphine for pain management you might want to add extra fibre and lots of water into your gourmet meals.)

It has taken years but everyone knows that I take photos of everything so when I point my camera they understand . . .

We hope the swelling will go down in a few days. So far there was only pain for the first day and not much since, so we have downgraded the pain killers from Morphine to Tylenol-3, and perhaps even cut one of those in half. She has had lots of liquids, water, tea and soup

  13. Hugs to you both. It must be hard for Yvonne to have to ask for help with the little things. I know you'd much rather be taking her bra off, but it is very nice of you to put it on for her. You can always try putting it on yourself for practice, just please don't take any photos. Lol.

    Take care and keep smiling.

Today was shower and laundry day and guess who had to do the drying? Of course I had to make sure I didn't miss any spots and give the towel a good workout. I had to do the "dressing" part too. I'm getting a lot of practice doing up those "hooks". It must be hard to do them up yourself, I may have to try it sometime

I know . . . women's work is never done. Work all day then come home and have to make dinner too. Then do the dishes, laundry, blah blah blah. The list never ends.

  16. Can I have a piece of that white fish, Bob? :P I hope Mrs. Skoot's recovering fast from her broken wrist; that must have hurt a lot. What hurts a lot more is that she can't drive her Crosstrek. :( By the way, have you seen the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek? Personally, the 2013 model is not a typical one because it stands nearly four inches taller than the usual five feet height.
