Happy Canadian Thanksgiving

Sorry for the late post. I host my photos using Webshots, but their site has been unable to generate my images all day and thumbnails are too small. I went out and checked again when I got home and still, their site is unable to generate my images, so I had to resize again and host on Photobucket, my backup provider

It was a great day for a drive. We are squeezing the last heat of summer and going for a topless ride in our 'Vette and decided to visit our friends in Maple Ridge. These are the same friends that we have gone with to Hawai'i the last two times we were there. Our plan was to enjoy the Autumn colours on the backroads and snap a few photos. Our mistake was stopping there first and we were coerced into staying and joining them for their family Thanksgiving dinner.

Photobucket

So for the next 8 hours we had lots of time to chat and get caught up with life

Photobucket

The whole family was in the midst of meal preparation so we joined in. This was the first time that we have ever had a turkey prepared and cooked this way. It was marinated in a brine solution and then put on the BBQ

Photobucket

a few hard wood chips were thrown in for good measure to give the turkey a nice smoked flavour

Photobucket

for the next few hours it was smothering in the heat and smoke

Photobucket

of couse we had to check its progress once in a while to make sure all was going to plan, and also to baste it with its own juices to keep it moist

Photobucket

each time we were careful to make sure it was covered with foil

Photobucket

eventually it was time to bring it out

Photobucket

and a master turkey carver was designated to "plate-up" the meat being careful to separate the white from the dark

Photobucket

It was hard work waiting for our turkey to be cooked to perfection and to keep the guests satisfied we were treated to a delicious appetizer of bacon, leek & apple topped puffed pastry to tease our stomaches, as well as an assortment of cheeses and cluten-free crackers

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all from myself

and my new friend

  1. Bob - who's you're new cute blonde friend?
I cooked the bird on the bbq too (no other choice since the oven broke somewhere around 3 years ago and I chose to take motorcycle holidays on a new bike rather than replace it - life is tough, but still delicious....no offence to our vegan friends.)
    Happy Thanksgiving.

Our first time with Turkey on the BBQ. You could taste the smoked flavour. That's a hard decision: Oven or Summer Ride, obviously we are glad you chose to ride otherwise we may never have met you. There will be plenty of time to replace that oven, some day after your BBQ doesn't work anymore.

I nearly forgot that you are the Queen of exhaust pipe cooking. Just strap your Turkey to your bike and it will be cooked when you get back

It wasn't the intention to crash their family dinner, but we knew everyone anyway, plus it was hard to say no.

that cat was so friendly. They look like their face has been pushed in, but that's the way they look. My friend has this same type of cat.

  3. The double fiber cut must have affected Webshots as well as a lot of other services in the PNW. Nice looking smoked/grilled turkey. Brining it is essential to prevent it from drying out.

Thanks to Doug, I now know that there are changes coming to Webshots. So if his assessment is correct they will no longer let us link photos and my photos may disappear from previous posts. It will be a big problem . . . I checked again this morning and I still cannot generate my images.

Luckily I still have Photobucket to fall back on. The Turkey was still moist and tender and you could nearly taste the apple wood chips.

In a couple of weeks you will get your US Thanksgiving Turkey dinner. This year we have already had two dinners; one with family on Saturday evening, the Sunday with our friends. Yesterday was leftovers and tonight we get OUR homecooked Turkey dinner with stuffing.

the cat is not grumpy, it's just the way he looks

  5. Your new friend looks like a grumpy fellow.

I've brined a turkey before but roasted it in the oven, never bbq'd one. It sounds as though you two were well taken care of on Thanksgiving.

we had two Thanksgiving Dinners on the weekend. Saturday with family, and Sunday with friends (this post). Monday we had left-overs.

Tonight we get to have our own Turkey with stuffing. I can see the steaming turkey right now

That cat has the sort of "pushed in face" look. He was very friendly, not grumpy at all

Thank you for giving party crashing permission. I feel better already. They bought that BBQ to do Paellas for New Years . There was more than enough food and appetizers and cheese and crackers and dessert and coffee and tea and pop and, and, and . . .

and I also got to play with the animals

  7. HAPPY THANKSGIVING, BOB! We will miss both holidays in Canada and the US due to travel, but that turkey looked pretty good. I have brined one before, but never cooked one on the grill. How long did it take and how big was the bird??

You can have Turkey anytime, not necessarily for Thanksgiving or Christmas. You can roast one in Lawton while you are there. I'm not sure how large that turkey was but probably around 20 lbs and it was in the BBQ for about 4 hours. This was also my first BBQ'd one. We had a deep fried one a few years ago but you have to be very careful with the boiling oil. We did it outside in the driveway

  8. Happy Thanksgiving! Everything looks so good.
I spy some bare feet too, and they don't belong to Bob. A kindred spirit perhaps?

Someone finally noticed that it wasn't me this time. You can usually find her barefooted . . .

It was a great meal, with good friends. You get your Thanksgiving in a couple of weeks.
