Day 2: Amish Country, Pennsylvania

I missed the Amish last year so we headed out to the Roots Market

It seems that many people don't work on Tuesdays.

It was hot even thought the temperatures didn't seem that high as numbers would indicate

There was lots of produce

but there was lots of other stuff for sale too

I've never seen Amish before so I tried to capture "fast" photos.

Then we headed over to Intercourse PA

where I saw some of my first Amish Buggies

They sure make their horses run fast in this heat

They have a few different style of buggies.   Here is the sporty convertible model

After a while we started getting used to seeing them

They seem to shop in groups

and many of them wear colourful clothes

Then we spent a few hours driving around the Lancaster area

  1. Nice photos of the market. I guess the 'Vette is like the bike, no room for "souvenirs"! And that's a good thing...

I have to keep a third of the trunk FREE, to make room for the top. There is not much room when you take chairs, a cooler and a few jackets. Vette trunks are not that deel

  2. It looks like Disney, much more so than when I was there for too long ago. I wonder if a bunch of Canadians in Corvettes looked as odd to them as straw boaters and clogs looked to you.

We got a few stares too, like strangers in a foreign land.

anytime you are away and not at work, is FUN. It is nice to explore new areas and see new sights

  4. I hope you enjoyed Roots. It is only open on Tuesdays, so people come out in droves. Intercourse is a great place to see the Amish, as you discovered. :-)

we should have asked you for the tour route. We didn't know which way to go so we headed south and back to Harrisburg. Saw lots of buggies though, and they sure make their horses gallop fast in this heat

the spot link only saves for 30 days. the spotwalla link is on the sidebar. Seeing the Amish was a new experience for me. They seem like honest, hard working people

  6. I lived among an Amish community for 7 years. Some are more conservative than others.

I guess these Amish are used to people photographing them all the time as ordinarily they won't allow it.

I miss the sound of horse hooves clip-clopping down the road in front of the farm where I lived.

Looks like a pretty good sized crowd there...hope you got some good eating in!

we were full when we got there so I only had a home-made ice cream and some iced tea. the pulled pork looked tasty. I think these Amish are used to tourists

  7. Looks like you had a fun time wandering. I am surprised we didn't see you nibbling on any delights.

we are watching our food intake.and I have been drinking mostly bottled water, even though I really wanted a soda. I broked down tonight and had an iced tea. Not much wandering now as we plan to be at the Corvette event until we leave on Sunday morning

  8. I had only a few encounters with Amish on my trip across the US back in 2001, and I didn't dare taking pictures. They seemed to be very private people. But since they are holding this market I am sure that they have gotten used to being photographed.

Are the boys in the pictures wearing Crocs?

notice that most of my photos are from the rear. I am trying to be respectful but I also wanted a few photos. yes, those were Crocs, or perhaps CLOGS. I couldn't imagine a world where I couldn't wear shorts and sandals

  9. Bob, you found a lot more color in those neighborhoods than I'm used to around here. The Amish regions I visit and travel through are less 'varied'. Glad you were able to get the shopping in this trip.

there was no shopping planned but all of us wanted to visit a Bass Pro shop. I have heard about them but there are none near home. I have still never been to a Cabellas

I know I missed you this time, you should have come a week earlier. Have a good time in Alberta

  10. Bob - I think what you found were actually Mennonite's. They hold many of the same beliefs of the Amish but are a little (well actually a lot) more liberal when it comes to technology and dress. Although the term "Amish" is often applied to them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mennonite
