It's amazing how fast our weather has deteriorated. I managed to take two vacation days just a week ago in Lillooet, BC (read about it here) when the weather was like summer. It was hot and sunny. Temperatures were close to 30c ((86F) and now it barely reaches 16c (61F), a big difference in such a short time. My summer attire consists of a T-shirt, sandals or sandal-less (which I prefer)
When I am on vacation I don't bring shoes either and I never brought a pair on my transcontinental trip so you can imagine how I felt last Sunday when I had to forgo my shorts and dress for the wet weather
Saturday brought me to Steveston and I was early for breakfast with the guys
So I headed over to the boardwalk. Not many people around this early and the shops are not yet open. I walked down to see what the fishing boats had for sale
On these Harbour docks, you are only allowed to sell what you have caught so the crews of these fishing boats were busy displaying their catch(es). I was standing at the end of one float and looked at the rising sun
Looking EAST
then I looked to my right
Looking SOUTH
and then I decided to show you the other two directions
Looking WEST
and finally . . .
Looking NORTH
and here are some more snaps as I was walking back to our breakfast cafe
There are lots of shrimp for sale, and you can barter "a bit"
or you may prefer some fish
they seem to have a good variety to choose from today
Excuse the "fast" panning. I know that the Vendors are uneasy when they know you are "filming". The seafood is being sold right off their fishing boats
Ah, Steveston, my oasis of the soul. I love the morning activity before the crowds show up. It is my favourite place in the lower Mainland.

DeleteI go to Steveston all the time for Saturday breakfasts. There is usually only one fishing boat down at Granville Island, but they have a few fish markets down there. Other than that I can't think of anywhere else close by where you can purchase fish off the boats. Even in Campbell River they don't sell fish off the boats.
I was going to say the East photo is stunning .. then I scrolled down .. now I cant pick a favourite. How lucky you are!
ReplyDeleteThat video was fantastic, I was hungry watching it and wish I could get real fresh seafood here .. sometimes I miss the coast so much.
Brenda:
Deleteafter my last epic trip to the Atlantic I am beginning to think that Lobster to them, is like shrimp to us. Lots of shrimp nearly all year round, just less boats at the dock. Most fisher people are now mostly from the Vietnamese community, as you noticed. They also had live fish for sale.
It is hard to hold the camera steady when you are pretending to NOT be filming. I didn't wish to be obvious, sort of like your non-Courthouse photo
Agreed, great video. I am always surprised that here in Florida we don't seem to have good seafood. We lack a variety - I guess it's just all our old people who "know what they know" and don't want to try something new.
ReplyDeleteRobert:
Deletethe problem is that we are all mostly isolated from the food source. You generally buy fish in a fish market, or grocery store. and potatoes grow in square boxes. You know what I mean. Here you can buy produce from the farm, during the summer. For fish you need a fishing fleet otherwise they just drop off their catch at the cannery . . .
Sounds like fall arrived with a thud there. Every year I expect a gradual transition between seasons, but it never seems to happen. One day it's 70 degrees outside, then there's snow the next morning. Then all of a sudden it's 95.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos, as usual!
Lucky:
Deleteweather patterns have changed, even here. We used to get gradual transitions but not anymore but our weather is mostly moderated by the "japanese current" which moderates our Winters. We seldom get much snow around here. Many years we get virtually none
Nice photos of the wharf and the really fresh seafood.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like Fall came quickly or does it usually warm up again after the first cold spell? To sort of get you used to the idea of winter...
Richard:
Deleteas we head into FALL, the daytime temps drop to around 15-19°c. and the nights get colder. Yesterday it went down to 7°c but up to perhaps 17°c during the late afternoon. Our highs will slowly go lower from there. While Fall may be a good time to ride I am not fond of what is just around the corner. That's why I like Spring better
Yes, I hear ya! It went from 80-100 and then one day later it rained like never before! So incredible how the weather changes now year by year. Its not the predictable waves of Summer to Fall. Sorry about the sandals, guess its just that time to carry socks and shoes. Great photos!
ReplyDeleteKT:
DeleteMy threshold for open sandals is down to around 10°c (50°F), then I switch to closed sandals with (gasp) socks but I'm out of them as soon as I get home. My Keen H2 look like regular running shoes. In shorts yesterday it felt a bit chilly after the sun went down
You really put us there Bob, thanks. The sounds and smells are coming through, right out of the images. We're still playing late summer here, sounds like this coming week we'll get some more of it. I have a couple of days off in October, hope to do what you did just a short time ago.
ReplyDeleteCoop:
Deletethey already had snow in Whistler, which is only 120 kms north of Vancouver. Snow level is dropping. By Thanksgiving there will be frost in the Chilcotins, about 4 hours north into the mountains. Rain and wind forecast for this coming weekend.
I really lucked out on my two vacation days. It was nearly like summer. We won't get days like that until next year
My favourite photo is the third one. I like the look of that long boardwalk. You have quite the talent for framing a photo. Ever considered National Geographic?
ReplyDeleteHere in Ottawa the weather has cooled down quite a bit too. Hopefully, there will be some pleasant days in the near future so we can all get back to riding comfortably.

Dave:
DeleteYou are too generous with your compliments, but thank you. It helps with the moisture reflecting off the wood, and of course being devoid of people
I am sure there will still be sunny days ahead, just without the heat of the sun
Great pictures of the scenery Bob, that picture looking West is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteOur weather has changed too. I had to put shoes and socks on.
Trobairitz:
Deletenot many scenic places that close to me in the City as I try to stay away from Downtown, but perhaps I could go to Granville Island next time. It's just that it's too busy down there and hard to find parking
I'm not fond of shoes and socks but I can endure a few more degrees, perhaps down to 10°c (50°F). Supposed to rain all weekend. It's looking more and more like summer is gone
I am envious of all the fresh fish. Even though we are on Lake Ontario, we don't get the variety you do! I will be in Victoria near the end of the month, so hope to get my fill of fish then.
ReplyDeleteB:
DeleteWhen I was in Toronto the last time we went to a fish market and I did not recognize the types of fish you had there. Even the crabs were Blue and ours are Pinkish. I suppose fresh water vs salt ocean water makes the difference.
Victoria usually gets better weather than Vancouver as they are in the rain shadow. Often we get good weather during October, keep your fingers crossed . . .
Hay skoot are you joking what the hell is wrong with fish why are you don't recognize types of fish
ReplyDeletedid you went market for the first time..................
