I've picked up a malware

I've only been using my old new computer for less than a month and I have already picked up a malware called   home.sweetim .     I'm not a computer guru and I don't know how to get rid of it.  It has attached itself to google chrome and I wanted to use chrome because it interfaces with blogger and picasa.   I've deleted chrome and reinstalled it hoping that this would fix it, but it didn't.   I couldn't figure out why my i7   4 core computer was running slow and hesitating.   home.sweetin is something  like an adware type program and it is capturing all of my keystrokes and sending the information to big brother, somewhere.   I can't use Internet explorer because I had problems posting photos on my blog entries so I have resorted to using Firefox for now.

I think that I take more photos now, than I did before.  I was one of the last to accept the digital age and most of my older photos are still on negatives and all of my photos are stored in various boxes in "random" order.  I am not thrilled with the prospect of having to scan/digitize everything as it would take too much time to organize but I did come across some "oldies"

I did have a few bikes back in the early 1980's.   I bought a new 1981 Suzuki GS1100L which was one of the fastest production bikes back then but I wasn't riding very much and everyone thought it was too dangerous to be riding a motorcycle so I sold it and switched to sports cars.  I had a few MGB's and even a couple of Alfa Romeos;  a Guila spyder 1600TC, and a Veloce 2000 GTV.  With our seat belt laws and only two seats I could only drive these cars when alone so that's when I decided to switch again to full size convertibles with a rear seat.  Now I could bring the whole family in one car.  From there we progressed from a 1981 Rabbit cabriolet, a couple of Chrysler Lebaron's, Sebring convertible and Jeep YJ.   At one time we had 3 convertibles in our fleet.

Then one day I got the bright idea to downsize and get into riding again.    My plan was to buy a scooter for Mrs Skoot and then I was going to buy a motorcycle.   We looked at various models and she settled on a Yamaha BWS 49cc which we bought new in 2003

Fisherman's Wharf, Granville Island       April,  2004

After riding it for about a week, Mrs Skoot said it was too tall for her so we had to buy her another one and my plan to buy a motorcycle was foiled.   We looked around and eventually bought her a "nearly" new Yamaha Vino 49cc

  Bowen Island ferry,  Summer 2003

So with the motorcycle funds spent on having to buy the Vino, I had to put off my motorcycle purchase for another year.    Since I had been away from riding for a few years I decided to buy a smaller bike and ended up with a Suzuki GS400s to get my feet wet

Finn Slough, Richmond, BC              August 2004

My cousin wanted to get into riding so he bought a  Honda CB400 and restored it.   In order to obtain a BC motorcycle license you have to take the Learner's written test, and then a MST: Motorcycle Skills test to show proficiency in a parking lot.   Then you have to ride with a Supervisor until you take your road test, so I was his mentor for a few months.    During this time you can only ride in daylight, carry NO passengers and keep off the highways

I don't seem to have many photos of this bike.   I suppose I was doing more riding than photographing.   I sold this bike in 2009 when I bought my V-strom

The following photo has nothing to do with riding.   It was taken late August 2004 when I was carrying our Grand-daughter.   She is nearly a young lady now . . .

my,  how time flies  .  .  .

  1. Bob-
I use Malwarebytes, download free, to wipe out nasty malwares. You can run it and hopefully quarantine your bugs and then it will keep a watch on your system. You will have to periodically update it via your desktop, however.

    Lovely photos...especially the last one!

I am not really sure if I am infected or not. It seems to be starting all by itself everytime I start Google Chrome, but not when I use IE8, or Firefox. It must attach itself to your Browser and not active if I am just working offline on my computer doing photos or video.

Thank you, little hands feel so helpless when they are young.

  2. From the Internet:
"You can also delete SweetIM completely from your computer.
Spanner -> Settings -> Manage Search Engines -> Click on the X next to SweetIM
And DONE! No more SweetIM at all on your computer! I don't know who made it so hard that even uninstalling Chrome doesn't fix the problem"

I hadn't heard of it but it doesn't sound very nice.

It seems that Chrome keeps your settings in the iGoogle cloud, so when I uninstalled, and then downloaded and installed again, it just took the settings I had before and SYNC'd back to what it was.

I went to the manage Search Engines and SweetIM was NOT listed. The only search engine was Google. There was a setting in "extensions" where I deleted SweetIM and now it doesn't start. So perhaps I wasn't infected

Thank you. Makes you think about how much they depend upon you to teach them to grow up and learn. They seem so helpless when they are young. You should see her now, it's just that I prefer not to post their photos but she is smart and respectful, nearly a young lady

  4. Dear Bob:

How I wish I had even bothered to take pictures back in 1975, let alone save them. At least you have memories you can still hold in your hand. The virus sounds like bad news. I hate computer aggravation. Fortunately, so few people own Apple laptops that mine is beyond the effort for most hackers, at least for now.

Nice perspective on your motorcycle history. It is a lot more diverse than mine.

    Fondest regards,

My computer may not be infected. My friend is a computer Guru and he got me to run ComboFix. It deleted a lot of spyware but SweetIM was not among them and it is not listed as a search engine, and now it doesn't start since I disabled the "extensions" in Google Chrome. It's just that I noticed my computer "hesitating" last week

I have more motorcycle stories from my earlier years, but few photos. Without pictures and only text I thought it would be too boring. I like to post photos.

      Hope you are feeling better

+1 re malwarebytes, also look into spybot search and destroy as a complementary app to look for malware and such.

I ran ComboFix and SweetIM didn't show up in the log file, so perhaps it wasn't installed but merely starting up in parallel with Chrome. I have since disable the "extension" and it doesn't start anymore. My computer also seems to be more responsive, as in instantaneous.

I am usually very careful and only go to trusted sites

  6. I had a virus totally fry my hard drive in 2007. Lost a lot of valuable photos. Sniff...was recommended to MWBytes during that time.

I also drive SpyBot and Avast on my puter...just a bit paranoid, I am!

I keep all of my photos on External Hard Drives, only duplicates on my laptop so upon start up if my internal drive gets infected, then no problem for me. My problem will be if my External drive breaks, as I only have the one copy.

It is hard to worry about as there is no secure way of archiving photos. No storage medium (DVD's, tape, disks, HD's, negatives, prints), nothing is safe. Everything deteriorates with time.

  9. I don't think there would be anything wrong with mostly text. I'd like to hear some of those old stories. Maybe you could do audio posts...

I like lots of photos. Text without photos is nothing. I tried to do audio posts but I don't have a place to host the audio. I have tried to imbed an audio player and then host the file elsewhere but it didn't work, so I gave up

  10. Bob, thanks for the history of your "rides and drives". I know the bikes very well, though the 400 Honda doesn't look familiar, possibly something that didn't make the USA? Your cars are only vaguely familiar since I've never really paid that much attention to things on 4 wheels. A good friend did have a GTV so I know what that is.

There are lots of those Hondas up here. The 400's are harder to find, but lots of 450's Up here the 400 is at the high of that insurance category so they are easier to sell

I think we have lots of models imported into Canada which are not available in the USA

  11. Oh Bob, I so love your photos!!! Good stuff Mister!!

Makes me want to get out some of my old ones and scan. . .

I might just do that. Thanks for the inspiration, as always. Good luck with that computer virus. They suck! I don't know anything about computers, but I'm so lucky to have my own IT guy right here with me, always. :) He comes in handy often.

    Sweet Rides,

thank you but most of these are just unprocessed "snap shots". I have boxes of photos but I don't want to spend the time to scan them all. I'd rather snap new stuff.

I am thinking that I don't have a virus and I seem to be rid of that spyware . . . for now

  13. You find some of the neatest areas of the Lower Mainland to photograph! Areas we wouldn't see otherwise...I know you have commented before that you like to stop a lot and take photos instead of just flying by on your bike. That really is a good way to capture an outing. I must get myself a proper camera and start that...

thank you. I love to stop for photos. I stop at most viewpoints and I also make a lot of U-turns and go back for photos. So you should make sure you know how to U-turn.

It's nice to have a good camera. I like to turn the dials and spin the wheels.

  14. Bob - thanks for the memories ... I have a precious little grandaughter too. So sweet, so innocent.
As for chrome and the issues ... I've one netbook down because of it. I let my technician deal with it. I'm thinking I should have him destroy it on all my other computers (whose idea was chrome anyway?)

you are only young once. Oh how I was much younger and know what I know now. She seems very smart to me, or perhaps it's because I'm not so smart

Right now I'm using Firefox, but I don't really have any problems with Chrome. I thought Chrome would work better with Blogger as they are all Google products as well as Picasa.

I gave away my Toshiba Core2duo so now I am down to only 2 laptops. I'm not sure I want a windows 8 computer and was thinking buying a Windows 7 before they are sold out.

  15. I am usually interested in motorbike with a bias to bike tires. So when my comments come in favor of them, just give a nod. Anyway, I must say that I like the displays of bikes herein and I cannot fail to admire their tires. However, there is always a need to fit motorbikes with the most reliable and effective tires. This implies to their appearance too. Maybe my street bike will explain more on what I am driving to..
